Centrosome-associated protein E (CENP-E) is a kinesin-like protein and an integral component of kinetochore fibers that link centromeres to spindle microtubules. CENP-E localizes to kinetochores throughout all phases of mitotic chromosome movement. After the onset of anaphase it is released, and by telophase becomes bound to interzonal microtubules of the mitotic spindle. It is likely that CENP-E serves as a chromosome motor during anaphase.
